Federal Freeze

Trump’s Federal Funding Freeze Updates

Background

On Tuesday, a Federal Judge temporarily blocked Trump’s freeze until February 3rd. Trump’s Administration attempted to clarify which services would be affected, but the information remained vague and chaotic, leaving Members and their employers uncertain about whether they would receive the necessary funds.

Late on Monday, January 27th, the Trump Administration announced that it would halt all federal grants, loans, and other forms of assistance. These funds support local governments, non-profits, and other entities that provide vital services for children, seniors, veterans, and families. This announcement caused widespread confusion and led to multiple chapters at SEIU 1199 receiving communication from their employers that their federal accounts were frozen in turn raising serious concerns about their ability to make payroll and continue providing services.

On Wednesday, January 29th, the Trump Administration rescinded the initial memo but emphasized that the Executive Orders underlying the funding freeze remain in effect.

Where We Stand

The situation remains fluid and may change at any moment. The Federal Judge’s temporary restraining order remains in effect until February 3rd. Hopefully, this will result in a permanent block of this devastating and unprecedented move.

This freeze will devastate thousands of SEIU Members across West Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio. It is a direct assault on working families and would result in fewer resources for schools, housing, healthcare, and other services that millions of Americans depend on. This freeze will impact every single one of us; it won’t be just one group or party. It will bring chaos to our schools, hospitals, and communities and cost lives.

What We Can Do

We will keep monitoring the situation and provide updates as necessary. Members should keep engaging with their employers and inquire about their plans and any information regarding account access and portal payments.

Please continue to contact your Governor, Attorneys General, Congressional Representatives, and employers and pressure them to express how devastating this funding freeze is to this country.
