Working Families to Rally Against Health Care Cuts in Beaver, West Virginia

Workers, union members, and voters from the local community, will rally to demand the protection of funding for federal health care programs and in support of Richard Ojeda for Congress (WV-03).

BEAVER, WEST VIRGINIA – Local workers, union members, and voters, will rally on Wednesday, September 12th in Beaver, West Virginia, to draw attention to proposals that would mean the loss of funding for vital federal health care programs. A press conference with local voters will be held at 4:30 PM at the intersection of Ritter Drive and Airport Road. A rally to raise alarm about proposals that would slash health care funding for West Virginians will follow at the same location.

Under President Trump’s leadership, Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP-Children’s Medicaid, and health care reform, face the prospect of cuts, rollback, and repeal. Such programs are a lifeline for West Virginia’s working families. Even worse, last year, West Virginia was hit harder than any other state in the nation by the opioid crisis, which makes federal health care funding even more important.

Additionally, cuts to these programs would mean not only the loss of critical care but vital jobs for the community. As of 2016, 42,698 West Virginians in the Third Congressional District worked in the areas of health care and social services and this sector is the largest area of employment in the region. Cuts to health care funding would mean a devastating loss of jobs and services.

While these programs face uncertainty, in 2017, President Trump led efforts to pass a $1.5 Trillion tax cut for the ultra-wealthy. The tax cut will likely be funded by cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, which assist hundreds of thousands in West Virginia’s Third Congressional District.

Members of SEIU District 1199 have proudly endorsed Richard Ojeda for Congress (WV-03). State Senator Ojeda served our country for 24 years as a U.S. Army Major and would fight for West Virginia’s working families each day in Washington, D.C.
