Statement on Marriage Equality

In response to the decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in Obergefell v. Hodges case, Service Employees International Union (SEIU) District 1199 President Becky Williams issues the following statement:

“Today’s, the Supreme Court of the United States moved our nation forward in our pursuit for a more perfect union by decisively affirming that the United States Constitution guarantees equal protection under the law and individual states cannot choose to deprive anyone their fundamental liberties like the freedom to marry.”

“Marriage equality is and always has been about family, community, love and justice. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr once said, ‘the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.’ Today’s decision by the Supreme Court has bent that arc and proves, unequivocally, that the 14th Amendment of the Constitution requires states like Ohio to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.”

“Our work toward greater equality is not done. We must continue to fight to end discrimination against our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) sisters and brothers in all forms. While today is a day to celebrate this historic victory for marriage equality, too many LGBT Americans continue to face discrimination in housing, employment and elsewhere.”

“It is the challenge of our time to right these wrongs and work toward true justice for all people regardless of race, sexual orientation, gender or disability.”
