Statement by President Becky Williams on King v. Burwell

In response to the decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in King v. Burwell case, Service Employees International Union (SEIU) District 1199 President Becky Williams issues the following statement:

“Today’s decision by the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) preserves the Affordable Care Act’s vision of affordable, quality healthcare for all Americans and the tax credits available through the federal exchange that millions of working families depend upon to purchase lower-cost health insurance.”

“I am pleased that the Supreme Court saw through this politically motivated case designed to threaten the overall health and financial security of millions of working people in 34 states, and turn back the gains that nurses and doctors have made in improving the delivery of quality care to their patients.”

“It has always been the intent of Congress in passing the Affordable Care Act to make healthcare more affordable for all Americans, regardless of where they live or where they work.”

Nurses, doctors and healthcare workers from cities and small towns across America and ordinary working Americans joined SEIU to file an amici brief because these tax credits have helped them, their loved ones, or their patients to afford healthcare coverage, and, subsequently, get long overdue preventive care and needed treatment of chronic conditions.”
