With endorsement of Nina Turner for Congress, SEIU Members Pledge to Engage, Mobilize Infrequent Voters in 11th Congressional District.
CLEVELAND, OHIO – Today, the Service Employees International Union is proud to announce our endorsement of Nina Turner for Ohio’s 11th Congressional District.
For decades, Nina Turner has stood with the members of the Service Employees International Union and our mission to improve the lives of working people and their families. From the chambers of Cleveland City Council and the Ohio Statehouse to the neighborhoods of Cleveland and beyond, Nina Turner has always answered the call when working people needed someone to fight on their behalf. Nina Turner stood up against unjust legislation like Senate Bill 5 in 2011, walked arm in arm with low-wage workers in the Fight for $15, and brought together Republicans and Democrats to address racial injustice in our community after the murder of Tamir Rice.
“Nina Turner is a fighter, an advocate, a professor, a mother, and the leader working people need in Congress fighting for them,” said Becky Williams, President of SEIU District 1199 WV/KY/OH and a national Vice President with the Service Employees International Union. “Nina has fought for rights, dignity, and respect of working people in the streets of Cleveland and in the halls of power in Columbus, and I know she is the leader this community needs now to lift people out of poverty and to bring about racial and economic justice for all of us.”
Member Leaders who have worked with Nina Turner during her career in public service also shared their support for her candidacy following the endorsement decision made by the members of SEIU.
“As a frontline worker who has worked tirelessly throughout this pandemic, I know that Nina Turner will fight for the people of our community in Washington just as she has done for years here in Cleveland,” said Gwen Hinton, who recently retired as a nursing home worker in Cleveland. “Nina Turner will be the voice working people like us need in Washington to fight for a better future for our families.”
“When our rights were under attack by anti-worker politicians at the Ohio Statehouse, Nina Turner led the charge in opposition to Senate Bill 5 because she believes in Unions and the power of collective action,” said John Jones, Executive Board Member with SEIU District 1199 WV/KY/OH and case manager with FrontLine Service in Cleveland. “Nina Turner is the change this community needs so we can collectively address the systemic challenges facing people living in poverty that have been ignored for far too long by those currently in power.”
SEIU members plan to volunteer to engage infrequent voters within the 11th Congressional District and share Nina Turner’s vision for an economy that works for, and includes, all of us.
The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) is a union of about 2 million diverse members in healthcare, the public sector, and property services who believe in and fight for our Vision for a Just Society: where all workers are valued and all people respected—no matter where we come from or what color we are; where all families and communities can thrive; and where we leave a better and more equitable world for generations to come.
