Healthcare Workers Fighting For $15 at the Cleveland Clinic to Rally in Akron

AKRON, OHIO – On Thursday, March 21st, at noon, community members, Union members, and workers, will protest before a speech by Cleveland Clinic CEO Dr. Tomislav Mihaljevic in Akron. Reportedly, the speech will include details on the Cleveland Clinic’s plan to become “the best place to work in healthcare.”

The Cleveland Clinic has had strained labor relations in the past, including after their acquisition of Akron General Hospital. The Cleveland Clinic also recently excluded Union members from a plan to raise wages to $15 an hour. Cleveland Clinic Union members have been supported in their fight for an immediate path to $15 by United States Senator Sherrod Brown and several state legislators.

Last month, an article in the Plain Dealer covered a worker who was excluded from the Cleveland Clinic’s plan for a $15 an hour wage – she is a Union member and supports several family members with a wage of just $13.85 an hour. According to financial filings, even before becoming CEO last year, Dr. Tomislav Mihaljevic has been paid millions for his work with the Cleveland Clinic.

“The Cleveland Clinic is investing hundreds of millions of dollars in locations such as Florida and London – they operate a hospital in the United Arab Emirates,” said Anthony Caldwell, Director of Public Affairs for SEIU District 1199. “We continue to call on the Cleveland Clinic to do the right thing for all Caregivers in Cleveland and Union members across their system. A living wage is important for all workers and we stand ready to work with the Cleveland Clinic to make that a reality without further disregard or delay,” continued Caldwell.
