United for Quality Care, Fairmont General Hospital Workers and Management Host Press Conference
FAIRMONT, WV – Workers at Fairmont General Hospital joined hospital executives for a press conference on Wednesday, October 2 to update the community on steps being taken to maintain quality care at the hospital as well as the progress of negotiations with employees. Significant progress has been made through shared sacrifices as everyone works together preserve first class healthcare options for the community.
Fairmont General Hospital is one of the largest employers in Marion County, West Virginia. Most of its workers have roots in Fairmont and have served the area for years, becoming an integral part of the community. At a time of great uncertainty, hospital employees and management have come together in a spirit of self-sacrifice to ensure that the medical needs of Fairmont citizens continue to be met and the local economy is preserved by sustaining jobs. Management at the hospital released the following statement in a show of solidarity with workers and the community:
“Fairmont General Hospital representatives, Hospital employees, and SEIU1199 union leadership have been working extremely hard and cooperatively in their ongoing contract negotiations in order to assure that the Hospital continues to provide high quality health care services to our community and to explore all necessary steps to maintain the long-term viability of the Hospital. While these negotiations are ongoing and there remain crucial issues that the parties need to address, the Hospital appreciates the commitment of its employees and the local Union leadership and the cooperative spirit in which the parties have approached this negotiation process. “
SEIU District 1199 will continue to work with hospital management on a solution.
