Who is SEIU District 1199 WV/KY/OH?
SEIU District 1199 WV/KY/OH is the health care and social service union for West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio. District 1199 represents nearly 29,000 healthcare, social service and public sector workers. The union is part of the Service Employees International Union whose 2 million members make it the largest union of health care workers and the fastest growing union in the world.

Ohio Health Care Division
SEIU District 1199’s Ohio Healthcare division represents nearly 13,000 workers in a multitude of diverse fields. These industries include nursing homes, mental health facilities, hospitals, community organizations as well as supported living homes.

Ohio Public Employees Division
SEIU District 1199’s Public division represents nearly 5,000 workers. These workers are employed in a variety of fields including higher education, Head Start programs, community action agencies, county government, and libraries.

Ohio State Employees Division
SEIU District 1199’s State division represents nearly 4,000 workers in 18 different agencies. These state agencies include the Ohio Board of Nursing, the Ohio Department of Aging, the Ohio Department of Development, the Ohio Department of Youth Services, The Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities, the Ohio Medical Board, the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, the Ohio Pharmacy Board, the Ohio School for the Blind, the Ohio School for the Deaf, the Ohio Adult Parole Authority, the Ohio Department of Health, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission, the Ohio Veterans Home, the Ohio Bureau of Worker’s Compensation and the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections.

West Virginia / Kentucky Health Care Division
SEIU District 1199’s West Virginia and Kentucky Healthcare division represents nearly 7,000 workers. These fields include hospitals, nursing homes, community action agencies, clinics, councils on aging, Head Start, mental health, and blood services including the Red Cross.

History of the Union

SEIU 1199 has a long, proud history. Founded in 1932 by Leon Davis, District 1199 began in New York City as a union of pharmacists, porters, “soda jerks” and cosmeticians. Our District began to organize in the mid-1970’s in West Virginia, and Ohio and Kentucky soon followed. CLICK HERE TO SEE OUR HISTORY.

1199 Retirees

Retired members of SEIU District 1199 are uniting in their union to improve the lives of working people and their families, from advocating for affordable health insurance, to protecting retirement security to making a difference in local, state and national elections.

AFRAM Caucus

The African American Caucus of the Service Employees Union (SEIU) District 1199 is committed to promoting the mission of SEIU 1199 through engaging in the work of social and economic justice within our union, workplace, and communities by enhancing  opportunities for education, training, mentorship, leadership development, service projects and networking for SEIU 1199 members and staff of African descent.

Lavender Caucus

The Lavender Caucus is the Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/ Transgender (LGBT) Caucus whose purpose is to facilitate open and respectful communication between the LGBT community and the labor movement.
